The NKM works just like the European Trade System (ETS). Both markets work with CO₂ certificates, the price of which is determined by buyers and sellers. For the time being, the NKM is still a market in which parties are not obliged to participate. All organizations that want to reduce their CO₂ emissions can register their projects at the National Carbon Market. This makes the NKM the national equivalent of the European ETS.
